QotD: On The iPhone...
Over a million iPhones have been sold. Have you: bought one, considered it, or decided it's not for you?
Those of you that read my blog regularly know about me and the iPhone.
I want one badly.
Jody hates the iPhone for two reasons:
1) She hates Apple's business practices
2) She hates AT&T
If all goes to plan I will have one in a few weeks and my T-Moble Blackberry will be downgraded to brick status.
Comments
-Black (I like everything in black, even my pets)
-Sturdy
-Utilitarian
-Gives me mobile internet and communications
-The QWERTY keyboard is awesome... well not really
But... (I have a longer version of this at grumpyreviews.com)
-It is utilitarian to the point of being ugly UI wise
-You have to rely on third party software for almost anything (which is the opposite of the iPhone, LOL)
-The Pearl's SureType keyboard is shit for someone like me with a large vocabulary and distinctive writing style (i.e., it's great if you're one of those "The dog is chasing the cat" people). It really is not as well designed as they think it is
-Web browser sucks, is clunky and has trouble rendering a lot of sites regardless of how you configure it. This by itself is almost a dealbreaker. To read certain sites I'm forced to use Opera Moble which has its own rendering problems
-Not a good purveyor of entertainment unless I have a Voxer on IM
As for the upgrade logic:
-A full keyboard blackberry would solve the typing problem but the other issues above would remain. Also, RIM refuses yet again to make a Wifi-GPS-Camera phone. Their whole "pick two" logic pisses me off
-BlackJack is a nono. No Windows Mobile. We got a WM phone for Jody once and after a week we took it back. One Java app at a time? Pull email only? Puh-leeze. What is this, 2001?
I played with an iPhone at the store:
-I don't miss the tactile feedback... but I am slower on the iPhone keyboard. This may be lack of experience. But I am willing to give up some typing speed so I don't have to repeatedly tell the Pearl that I meant the f word and not "duck" even though it should have figured out by now that I have NEVER meant to use the word duck, except for a few times when planning dinner
-Web browser rocks. Period
-Mail needs improvement. This is the BlackBerry's killer app though, so I'm picky
-Needs IM
-Needs third party apps (coming in Feb)
-YOUTUBE!!! omg... ok... I know it's sort of childish, but that feature is sooo much fun.
-Built in iPod (wheee)
Forgot to add, if my employer allowed me access to my corporate email on my blackberry this would all be a non issue!
To make a long story short, he is a petulant child who must have things NOW NOW NOW... the iPhone isn't all that and a bag of chips, and his Pearl was Blackberry's first attempt to get into the consumer market. It isn't like my 8700g Berry. If I had his Pearl, I'd probably take a good, short look at the iPhone too. Then, I'd use my brain and realize that 1) I'm not a sheep, 2) I don't need "eye candy" to enjoy my devices, 3) I can do pretty much everything I want with my Berry, 4) my Berry isn't as slow or "ugly" as Yod's, and 5) I hate Cingular/AT&T so much that I would require a full frontal lobotomy before going back to them.
I'm going to try to find my post detailing exactly why Cingular/AT&T can kiss my big white arse... and why I find it so confusing that Yod wants to actually pay them for a service. There are places we can’t eat (places I love, mind you) because the waiter was slow, or we couldn’t get what we ordered. Yet he's going to force me to do business with two companies that I hate and have been boycotting for years? I'm really, honestly, truly, extremely confused at his “logic”.
